Black Temple is the main Tier 6 raid of Phase 3. It is a large, trash-heavy instance ending with Illidan Stormrage. Progression is largely linear: Naj’entus → Supremus → then the four “wing” bosses (Shade of Akama, Teron Gorefiend, Gurtogg Bloodboil, Reliquary of Souls) in any order → Mother Shahraz → Illidari Council → Illidan.
Attunement (long chain ending with Medallion of Karabor) is no longer required to enter in later phases, but completing it is still useful for the title path and the Medallion itself (excellent for Mother Shahraz).
Loot highlights: Tier 6 Shoulders, Legs, and Chest tokens, powerful weapons, and the legendary Warglaives of Azzinoth from Illidan.
Raid Lead Snapshot
Use this as the raid-night checklist for assignments, resistance gear, consumables, and boss reminders before pulling Black Temple.
Priority Checklist
- Confirm Najentus spine callers, Teron ghost practice, Mother Shahraz Shadow Resistance, Council interrupts, and Illidan tank assignments before the raid starts.
- Bring enough consumables for a long trash-heavy clear, including protection potions and resistance gear where assigned.
- Treat special jobs as progression mechanics even on farm: one missed ghost, slow Fatal Attraction break, or loose Flame of Azzinoth can still wipe the raid.
What Everyone Needs to Bring
Black Temple has long trash sections, heavy tank damage on several bosses, a major Shadow Resistance check (Mother Shahraz), and special jobs (spines, ghosts, fire-resist tanks, warlock tank on Illidan).
Core Consumables
- Flasks / Elixirs
- Physical DPS: Flask of Relentless Assault (or Fel Strength + Guardian)
- Caster DPS: Flask of Pure Death / Blinding Light
- Healers: Flask of Distilled Wisdom or Healing Power + Draenic Wisdom
- Tanks: Flask of Fortification / Guardian setups
- Mana Sustain: Super Mana Potions + Dark Runes / Demonic Runes
- Food, Oils, Stones, Scrolls
- Utility
- Free Action Potions / Living Action Potions / PvP Trinkets where relevant
- Elixir of Demonslaying (strong on many demon bosses)
- Major Shadow Protection Potions / Flask of Chromatic Wonder (Mother Shahraz)
- Healthstones, Bandages, personal defensives
- Warlocks: Multiple Master Soulstones (especially for Teron and progression)
- Engineers: Rocket Boots can help on Fatal Attraction (Mother Shahraz)
Recommended Raid Composition
- Tanks: 3–4 (Warrior/Paladin main tanks; Fire Resist tanks for Illidan Flames; high-HP offtank for Supremus Hateful Strike)
- Healers: 6–8 (strong healing required on Gurtogg, Mother Shahraz, Illidan)
- Key utilities: Shamans (Bloodlust, totems), Priests (Shadow Protection, mass dispels), Mages/Druids (decurses), consistent interrupts for Council
General Raid Rules
- Clear trash carefully — many packs are dangerous.
- Assign special jobs clearly (spine callers, ghost practice, beam groups, interrupt rotations).
- Bring stamina for Naj’entus (aim ~10k HP buffed).
- Shadow Resistance is mandatory for non-tanks on Mother Shahraz (target ~174 unbuffed / ~244 buffed with Prayer of Shadow Protection).
- Survival and execution beat raw DPS on most later bosses.
Boss 1: High Warlord Naj’entus
First boss in the sewers. Stamina and spine management check.
Key Abilities
- Needle Spine — Random target, small AoE damage. Spread out.
- Impaling Spine — Random non-tank player is stunned and takes heavy DoT. A large spine object appears on them. Another player must click the spine to free them and receive a Naj’entus Spine item.
- Tidal Shield — Boss becomes immune and heals. Breaking it with a Spine causes Tidal Burst (≈8500 Frost damage raid-wide).
- Berserk at 8 minutes.
Strategy
- Everyone should have at least ~10,000 health (use stamina gear/buffs if needed).
- Spread out (especially melee) to reduce Needle Spine splash.
- Free Impaling Spine targets immediately.
- Save at least one Spine for the Tidal Shield.
- Only break the shield when the raid is fully topped — healers call the break.
- Single-tank fight; extra tanks can DPS or help heal.
Main wipe cause: Breaking Tidal Shield while the raid is not topped.
Boss 2: Supremus
Two alternating phases lasting ~60 seconds each.
Key Abilities
Phase 1 (Tank phase)
- Hateful Strike — Hits the highest-HP player in melee range who is not the main tank (among top 3 threat). Requires a dedicated Hateful Strike offtank with high health.
- Molten Flame — Blue fire that crawls toward a random player.
Phase 2 (Chase phase)
- Fixate — Boss fixates and chases random players. Being melee’d is usually fatal.
- Volcanic Geyser — Ground fire to avoid while running.
- Full threat wipe when returning to Phase 1.
Strategy
- Two tanks minimum: Main tank holds the boss; offtank soaks Hateful Strikes (must have more HP than melee DPS).
- Phase 1: Tank and spank, move out of Molten Flame.
- Phase 2: Fixated players run away immediately. Everyone else can keep DPSing carefully. Avoid volcanoes.
- On phase transition back to Phase 1, give tanks a moment to re-establish threat (threat wipe).
- Demonslaying elixir is strong.
Main wipe causes: Hateful Strike hitting a non-tank or players standing still when fixated.
Boss 3: Shade of Akama
Add management + short burn phase.
Strategy Overview
Phase 1
- Kill the 6 Ashtongue Channelers (and any Sorcerers that spawn to replace them) to free Akama.
- Tanks pick up adds spawning from the doors (Defenders, Spiritbinders, Rogues, Elementalists). CC is useful.
- Ranged focus Channelers; melee help as needed.
Phase 2
- Once all Channelers are dead, Shade of Akama moves toward Akama.
- You have a short window (≈60 seconds) to burn the Shade before it kills Akama.
- Save major cooldowns and Bloodlust for this burn.
- Akama applies a stacking damage-taken debuff on the Shade.
Tip: Keep adds under control and be ready to swap to the Shade the moment Phase 2 starts.
Boss 4: Teron Gorefiend
Single-phase fight dominated by the Shadow of Death mechanic.
Key Abilities
- Shadow of Death — Applied every ~30 seconds to a random non-tank. After 55 seconds the player dies, turns into a Vengeful Spirit, and 4 Shadowy Constructs spawn.
- Incinerate — Fire DoT; dispel immediately.
- Doom Blossoms and other moderate raid damage.
Strategy
- Tank Teron where he stands; raid stacks at max range for healing efficiency.
- Warlocks pre-Soulstone Shadow of Death targets.
- When ~15–20 seconds remain on the debuff, the player runs to a far corner of the room.
- On death the player becomes a Vengeful Spirit with special abilities:
- Spirit Volley (AoE damage + slow)
- Spirit Chains (root)
- Spirit Lance (single-target damage + stacking slow)
- Priority as ghost: Volley → Chains → Lance on each Construct, keep them slowed and kill them before they reach the raid.
- Multiple ghosts can help each other.
- Dispel Incinerate instantly.
Main wipe cause: Constructs reaching the raid because the ghost player failed their job.
Practice the ghost abilities before the raid night.
Boss 5: Gurtogg Bloodboil
Heavy tank and raid damage. Two phases.
Key Points
- Multiple tanks required (usually 3) to manage Acidic Wound stacks.
- Tanks swap so stacks can fall off.
- Bewildering Strike forces tank swaps.
- Arcing Smash (frontal) reduces healing received.
- Phase 2 increases damage and changes some abilities.
- Strong healing required; hybrids may need to help heal.
Strategy focus: Clean tank swaps, face the boss away from the raid, and keep healers topped on mana and cooldowns.
Boss 6: Reliquary of Souls
Three sequential essences (Suffering → Desire → Anger).
Phase Overview
- Essence of Suffering — Aura of Suffering (no healing, reduced armor). Fixate on closest player. Spread damage by controlling who is closest. Enrage periodically.
- Essence of Desire — Aura of Desire (increased healing, but DPS take 50% of damage dealt as self-damage). Mana drain. Careful with high damage output.
- Essence of Anger — High raid damage, Seethe, etc. Burn hard.
Key: Control fixates in Phase 1, manage self-damage in Phase 2, and survive the final burn.
Boss 7: Mother Shahraz
Major Shadow Resistance check + Fatal Attraction.
Key Abilities
- Saber Lash — Heavy physical damage split among tanks (3 tanks recommended).
- Fatal Attraction — 3 players teleported together and linked by beams that ramp up Shadow damage. Players must run >25 yards apart to break the beams quickly.
- Various Beams (Sinful, Wicked, Vile, Sinister) that hit multiple players and deal heavy Shadow damage.
- Silencing Shriek near the boss.
Strategy
- Non-tanks should aim for ~174 Shadow Resistance unbuffed (≈244 with Prayer of Shadow Protection). Medallion of Karabor + Night’s End cloak + crafted bracers is a strong baseline.
- Three tanks split Saber Lash.
- On Fatal Attraction: immediately run in different directions to break links.
- Stack near pillars if needed for positioning; casters stay out of Silencing Shriek range.
- Keep the raid topped — random beams can finish low players.
Main wipe causes: Low Shadow Resistance + slow Fatal Attraction breaks.
Boss 8: The Illidari Council
Four bosses that share a health pool (Lady Malande, High Nethermancer Zerevor, Gathios the Shatterer, Veras Darkshadow).
Key Points
- Interrupt important casts (especially from Malande and Zerevor).
- Spread or stack according to abilities (Divine Wrath, Flamestrike, etc.).
- Kill order or balanced damage so none enrage.
- Veras vanishes and backstabs; tanks/healers watch for him.
- Bloodlust and cooldowns on a coordinated burn.
Focus: Clean interrupts, balanced damage, and not letting any single council member get too low or too high.
Boss 9: Illidan Stormrage
Five-phase fight. The iconic finale.
Phase Overview
- Phase 1 — Tank and spank + Parasitic Shadowfiend (kill the parasites before they explode). Shear (tank must have high avoidance/block). Draw Soul frontal.
- Phase 2 — Illidan takes flight. Two Flames of Azzinoth spawn. Fire Resist tanks pick them up and tank them apart. Raid kills the Flames. Avoid Fireballs and Dark Barrage.
- Phase 3 — Back on ground, similar to Phase 1 but with Agonizing Flames (ground fire).
- Phase 4 (Demon Form) — Illidan transforms. Heavy Shadow damage. Often requires a Warlock tank with high Shadow Resistance for the demon phase. Shadow Demons spawn and must be killed or controlled.
- Phase 5 — Final phase with Maiev’s help. Hard burn. Enrage at 25 minutes.
Key Requirements
- At least 3 tanks (main tank + 2 Fire Resist tanks for Flames).
- Warlock(s) prepared to tank in demon form if assigned.
- Excellent personal movement for ground effects and parasites.
- Save major cooldowns for Phase 5 / final burn.
- Do not stand in front (Draw Soul) or in flames.
Main wipe causes: Parasites exploding, Flames of Azzinoth not controlled, or deaths in demon phase leading to a cascade.
Final Tips for Success
- Practice special jobs (Naj’entus spines, Teron ghosts, Fatal Attraction movement, Council interrupts) before progression nights.
- Assign clear roles for every major mechanic.
- Shadow Resistance for Mother Shahraz and Fire Resistance for Illidan Flames are non-negotiable for smooth kills.
- Trash is long and can be deadly — do not underestimate it.
- Bring the consumables and resistance gear. Preparation wins Tier 6.
This guide covers the current post-nerf / Anniversary environment. Review individual boss abilities, assign roles, and the raid becomes a consistent clear.
You are not prepared… until you are. Good luck, and may the Warglaives drop.
